Defending champion Novak Djokovic has crashed out of Wimbledon in the third round after losing in four sets to American Sam Querrey.

The 29-year-old world number one was looking for a fourth Wimbledon title and a 13th major victory, but suffered his earliest loss in a grand slam since the 2009 French Open.

The match, played over two days because of rain interruptions, also ended Djokovich’s record of 30 successive wins at the majors and his streak of reaching 28 consecutive Grand Slam quarter-finals.

Querrey, the number 28 seed, goes through to face Frenchman Nicolas Mahut for a place in the quarter-finals.
