Jose Mourinho has become the first Manchester United manager to win a trophy in his debut season at the club.
The 54-year-old, who was appointed United boss last May, led his side to EFL Cup success as the Red Devils beat Southampton 3-2.
First-half goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Jesse Lingard put United in control at Wembley but the Saints hit back with two goals from Manolo Gabbiadini either side of half-time.
No other manager in the club’s history has been able to win a trophy in their first season at Old Trafford, but Mourinho has broken that curse and could yet add to his collection as the season draws to a close.
Speaking ahead of the EFL Cup final, Mourinho played down the significance of becoming the first man to bag a trophy in his first year at the Theatre of Dreams.
